JACKSON, MO (Heartland News at 9) - Third graders at South Elementary School are learning about math, technology and more with a lemonade stand that is raising money for a good cause.
The project uses the elements of math, ELA, technology, design and planning in a student-made final product.
On May 13-17 the third graders will demonstrate skills in sales, marketing, organization and production while they raise money for a cause.
“I’ve learned how to work with other people, and if someone needs help, I learned how to help them," said third grader Jonah Taylor.
“Working the tables are really hard because everybody, it’s like a line and some of the lemonades or teas or all of those run out, and they can’t get what they want. So, it’s really busy sometimes,” said third grader Addison Tate.
When the students close down the day, the lesson they’ll remember the most is the sweetest part.
“You don’t always have to spend your money on toys and stuff. Maybe donate money to charity," said third grader Haiden Land.
The third graders voted to donate the money made to Melaina’s Magical Playland, an all-inclusive and fully accessible playground.
“We’re all about just educating the whole child and making sure that we’re producing good citizens in Jackson and caring about our community and giving back, and so the kids really found that interesting,” said third grade teacher, Kendria Brown.
“Working the lemonade stand has inspired me to raise money for charities, and it’s not just all about one person, it’s about the whole world, so we can play on a playground like for Melaina’s," said Addison Tate.
It will be open from 7:20 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at South Elementary on S. Hope Street in Jackson.
Area businesses donated lemonade and sweet tea for the stand.
On Monday, there will be lemonade from the Lemonade House Grille and sweet tea from Chick-fil-A. On Tuesday, there will be McAlister’s sweet tea. On Thursday, there will be sweet tea from Rhodes 101 and Rosati’s. On Friday, there will be sweet tea from McDonald’s.
Homemade lemonade will be served daily.
