CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (Heartland News at 9) - The Cape Girardeau Police Department’s K-9s will now have body armor.

Dallas, Jango and Thor will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

According to police, K-9 Dallas’ vest is sponsored by Missouri Employers Mutual and will be embroidered with, “This gift of protection provided by MEM.”

Jango’s vest will be embroidered with “In memory of K9 Cain, Crossville Police, TN.”

Thor’s vest will be embroidered with, “In memory of K9 Jethro, Canton, OH Police Department.”

The delivery is expected within eight to 10 weeks.

The Vested Interest program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months old. new K-9 graduates, as well as K-9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.

The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K-9 is $950. Each vest is valued at between $1,744-$2,283 and a five-year warranty.
