SIKESTON, MO (Heartland News at 9) - Students attending some Sikeston Public Schools have the opportunity to receive free breakfasts and lunches thanks to a new program in the district.
According to school officials, all students at Sikeston's Kindergarten Center (including Pre-K), Lee Hunter Elementary, Matthews Elementary, Southeast Elementary and the Alternative Center will eat breakfast and lunch at no cost.
Sikeston is taking part in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).
For the 2018-2019 school year, all students enrolled at these schools may participate in the breakfast and lunch program at no charge according to school officials.
Household applications for free and reduced-price meals will not be collected at these school sites.
School officials cited studies that show that children who are fed well, perform better in school. They said the school officials hope to create a better environment for the children.
The school breakfast and lunch that we serve follows U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines for healthy school meals. Parents are asked to encourage children to participate in the school meal programs.
